Route Planning for School Bus Fleets
Assign the cleanest buses in the fleet to the longest routes.
Throughout Georgia, a typical student could spend as much as 30 minutes to an hour or more on the bus. These lengthy rides increase a student’s exposure to dangerous emissions.
Buses should not “caravan” and should maintain at least a one-car length distance from other diesel vehicles, including other school buses.
Concentrations of pollutants can build up dramatically inside the bus from pollution from other vehicles.
Stagger bus departure times.
This will ensure that buses are not lined up (queued) in front of the school for long periods of time and will help reduce unnecessary idling.
