General Knowledge

When people talk about retrofits, they are typically talking about an after market exhaust treatment device. These devices are placed in the exhaust stream or the fuel line, requiring no modifications to the existing engine. For a more comprehensive definition and a more detailed discussion of each of these devices, please go to MECA or read MECA's "What is a Retrofit" below.

MECA - What is a retofit

NOTE: Make sure your equipment is EPA verified or CARB verified .

See web sites below for more retrofit information.

  • US Environmental Protection Agency - for EPA verified retrofit technology
  • The Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association (MECA) is a non-profit association incorporated in Washington, DC. MECA's mission is to provide technical information on emission control technology, thereby facilitating the establishment of strong and effective state, federal, and international air quality programs that promote public health, environmental quality, and industrial progress.
  • California Air Resources Board (CARB) - for CARB verified retrofit technology
  • The Diesel Technology Forum is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to raising awareness about the economic importance and essential uses of diesel engines, highlighting the continuous improvements to reduce emissions from new and existing diesel engines, and leading the way for future clean diesel technology in all applications. It represents the leaders of the diesel industry including engine and equipment makers, key component manufacturers, fuel producers and emissions control technology manufacturers.

While after treatment devices are the most common, they are not the only form of retrofit. According to US EPA, retrofitting a vehicle can include the following:

  • Refueling: Use a cleaner fuel such as natural gas or propane
  • Rebuild: Rebuild an older engine to meet cleaner emissions standards
  • Re power: The complete removal of an older engine and replacement with an engine meeting cleaner emissions standards
  • Replacement: Replacing older vehicle with a new vehicle meeting cleaner emissions standards
  • After Treatment Devices: The installation of exhaust treatment devices that are verified by US EPA or certified by CARB to reduce harmful emissions from diesel exhaust.

By retrofitting your engines as well as following BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (listed on the Green Your Fleet page), you will help reduce the amount of pollution in Georgia's air and improve the quality of life for all Georgians. Please see links below for more information.
